Your Android phone relies on a data connection to pick up new messages and then notify you about them. If you don’t have a strong connection, your notifications will be delayed as a result.
This problem can occur if your phone is set to turn off wifi when it is sleeping. If you’re in an area connected to wifi but your phone is shutting off that connection when it’s idle, it will have to resort to cellular data to collect your new messages. Since using cellular data requires more power than wifi, your phone will have trouble accessing your new messages until it can find a stable connection again. Once it does, it will immediately try to ping the cloud, download your messages, and then notify you of them – which can sometimes come in much later than when you actually received the new message.
There are a couple ways to work around delayed notifications: You can make sure your phone is properly set up with YouMail and you can make sure that your phone is still connected to wifi when it is sleeping or idle. See instructions for each below.
- Properly Forward Calls to YouMail: Make sure that your phone is properly forwarding to YouMail. You can verify your activation by doing a test call. Follow these instructions to do so.
- Make Sure Wifi Is Always On (varies by device, the instructions below are for the Note 5 but should be very similar for your device):
Go to the app menu and tap Settings
Tap on Wi-Fi
Tap on “More” in the top right corner (your device may have 3 dots instead of More)
Tap on “Advanced”
Tap on “Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep”
Make sure it is set to “Always”
You should now experience less delays in your message notifications. Additionally, you can also extend your phone’s battery life by keeping wifi on since your phone won’t have to work as hard to download new messages when it’s idle and a wifi connection is available. If you know that you definitely don’t have access to wifi, you can easily turn it off.
Also make sure Notifications are on on your YouMail app
- Open the app and go to the menu on the top left corner.
- Next go to Settings
- Then go to Notifications
- After than toggle on and then select "New Voicemail"
- Once that is done make sure the bell icon is highlighted blue.
A couple notes to keep in mind:
- If you are signed up for a human-edited Voicemail-to-Text plan, your notifications will always be a few minutes delayed as our professionals work to transcribe your voicemails for you as accurately as possible.
- You can always manually refresh your message inbox to check for new messages by tapping the Refresh button in your Android app
