Quick checks before troubleshooting
Before diving into device-specific steps, confirm the following:

Headphones or Bluetooth: Disconnect any external audio devices
Tip: This step is often overlooked and can save you time.
Fix voicemail audio issues on Android
Follow these steps if the voicemail audio is playing, but you can’t hear it on Android.
Step 1: Check media volume
While a voicemail is playing, press the Volume Up button on the side of your phone
Tap the arrow on the volume slider to expand volume controls
Confirm the Media volume is turned all the way up
Note: If media volume is low, voicemail audio may be silent even if the ringer is loud.
Step 2: Check audio output source
Android voicemails can play through different outputs.
Receiver: Plays audio through the earpiece (where you place your ear)
Speaker: Plays audio through the bottom speaker
Bluetooth / Headset: Routes audio to connected devices
While the voicemail is playing:
Look for the audio output icon
Switch between Receiver and Speaker
Disconnect any Bluetooth devices or headphones
Important: If headphones or Bluetooth are connected, audio may not play through the phone speaker. |
Fix voicemail audio issues on iPhone
If voicemail audio isn’t playing on iPhone, check both system settings and in-app options.
Option 1: Check iPhone sound settings
Open the Settings app
Search for Sounds & Haptics
Under Ringer and Alerts, turn Change with Buttons Off
Why this matters:
If enabled, the volume buttons control ringer volume unless audio is actively playing, which can be confusing.
Option 2: Check YouMail audio output in iPhone settings
Open Settings
Scroll down and tap YouMail
Confirm the audio output is set to your preferred option (Speaker or Headset)
Option 3: Check audio output inside the YouMail app
Open the YouMail app
Tap Messages
Select the voicemail you want to play
Tap Play
Tap the AirPlay icon
Choose Speaker or Headset
Final step: Reinstall the app
If none of the steps above resolve the issue:
Uninstall the YouMail app
Restart your device
Reinstall the app from the App Store or Play Store
Sign in and test voicemail playback again
Important: Reinstalling the app often resolves corrupted audio or permission issues.

Common questions
Why can I hear other audio but not voicemail?
Voicemail uses media audio, which is controlled separately from ringer volume. Media volume may be turned down.
Why does voicemail only play through the earpiece?
Your audio output may be set to Receiver. Could you switch to Speaker while the voicemail is playing?
Can Bluetooth cause voicemail audio issues?
Yes. If a Bluetooth device is connected, voicemail audio may route there instead of your phone speaker.
Will reinstalling the app delete my voicemails?
No. Your voicemails are stored in your YouMail account and will remain intact.
