YouMail’s call protection helps block known spammers, while call screening provides an extra layer of defense by requiring unknown callers to verify they’re human before ringing. This article walks through settings for both free and paid subscribers on iPhone and Android.
Overview:
YouMail offers powerful call protection that automatically stops known spam and unwanted callers from ringing your phone. Free subscribers get essential spam filtering, while paid subscribers can enable advanced blocking and call screening that stops most robocalls before they reach you. This article explains how these features work, how to enable them on iOS and Android, and how to customize protection settings for your needs.
Troubleshooting TipsImportant: Make sure YouMail’s call blocking and identification permissions are enabled in your device settings. For iOS, ensure Call Blocking & Identification is allowed so YouMail can block calls system-wide.
Note: You can temporarily pause call protection (instead of disabling it), and it will automatically reactivate after a chosen period.
Tip: Periodically report spam numbers in the app to help improve YouMail’s directory and future blocking accuracy. |
Key benefits/use cases
Automatic spam blocking: Automatically prevent known spammers from ringing your phone and filter voicemail into spam folders.
Custom protection levels: Adjust how YouMail handles different kinds of callers (unknown, private, international).
Call screening (paid): Require unknown callers to verify they’re human before the call reaches you (iPhone/Android).
Control on device: Configure protection settings directly within the YouMail app for convenience.
What is Call Protection?
Call Protection uses YouMail’s extensive directory of known spam and unwanted numbers to automatically block or filter suspicious calls. When enabled, calls from known spammers are blocked before your phone rings, and those callers can be sent to voicemail or prevented from leaving messages depending on your plan and settings.
Free Subscriber Call Protection
YouMail’s free protection gives you essential spam filtering and blocking:
What you get as a free subscriber:
Basic spam filtering: Known spam and robocallers won’t ring your phone but will be filtered to the Spam folder.
Automatic protection: Once enabled, YouMail continuously works in the background.
How to enable free call protection:
Website: Sign in to YouMail.com → Call Protection → Settings → Edit → Toggle Protect my inbox and calls from spam on → Save.
iPhone app: Open YouMail app → Shield icon → Three dots → Call Protection → Turn on Block spam calls and voicemail → Save.
Android app: Open YouMail app → Menu ☰ → Call Protection → Gear icon → Turn on Protect my inbox and calls → Save.
Note: Free call protection will filter spam voicemail instead of blocking it outright; more advanced blocking is available with paid plans.
Paid Subscriber Call Protection
Paid plans unlock advanced call protection controls and blocking options:
What additional controls do paid plans offer:
Advanced blocking: Block known spammers, unknown local numbers, private callers, or international numbers.
Number ranges: Block specific number prefixes if you’re receiving spam from particular areas.
Voicemail handling: Choose whether blocked calls are filtered or played an Out of Service message to discourage repeat calls.
Cross-platform settings: Configure settings via both web and app (except call screening).
How to update paid protection settings:
Open YouMail.com → Spam Protection → Settings.
Toggle Spam Protection on.
Under Edit, choose additional blocking options (unknown callers, private numbers, international calls).
Call Screening (Paid Feature)
Call screening adds extra protection by requiring unknown callers (not in your contacts or blocklist) to verify they’re real before your phone rings.
How call screening works:
Unknown callers hear a prompt to enter a numeric code before their phone will ring.
If they fail to enter digits correctly, the call is disconnected.
Known contacts and spam directory matches bypass this screening.
Enabling call screening on iPhone:
Open the YouMail app.
Tap the Shield icon → Three dots → Protection Settings.
Toggle on Screen unknown callers.
Ensure iOS Silence Unknown Callers is enabled in your iPhone’s Phone settings for best results.
Enabling call screening on Android:
Open the YouMail app and tap Protection.
Tap Three dots → Protection Settings.
Toggle on Screen unknown callers and optionally Live Caller Name.
Note: Call screening must be done in the app — it cannot be enabled via the website.
Customizing Your Protection
After enabling call protection and screening:
Block unknown callers only.
Block international numbers.
Block private callers or ranges of numbers.
Adjust voicemail handling for blocked numbers.
These settings let you tailor call protection based on your tolerance for risk and the types of unwanted calls you receive.
