Overview
YouMail number range blocking lets you block groups of phone numbers that share the same prefix instead of blocking individual numbers one by one. This feature works across iOS, Android, and the YouMail website and is designed to stop spam callers that rotate through similar numbers. This article explains how number range blocking works, how to enable it on each platform, and why YouMail uses range blocking instead of broad area code blocking.
Key benefits/use cases
Block spam waves: Stop rotating spam numbers that share the same prefix
Fewer interruptions: Reduce repeat spam calls without manual blocking
Cross-platform control: Manage number ranges on mobile apps or the web
Targeted protection: Block patterns of abuse without overblocking legitimate callers
What is number range blocking?
Number range blocking allows you to block calls from phone numbers that begin with the same prefix (for example, the first six digits). When a number range is blocked, all calls matching that prefix are handled according to your call protection settings.
This approach is especially effective against spam callers who frequently change the last few digits of their phone number to bypass single-number blocks.
Important: Number range blocking targets specific prefixes, not entire area codes, to avoid blocking legitimate calls. |
Number range blocking vs area code blocking
It may seem convenient to block an entire area code, but area code blocking is intentionally not supported because it can block a large number of legitimate calls.
Here’s the difference:
Number range blocking: Blocks a narrow prefix (such as the first six digits), targeting known spam patterns
Area code blocking: Blocks thousands or millions of unrelated numbers that share only the same area code
Area codes often cover entire cities or regions and are commonly used by legitimate businesses, doctors, schools, and delivery services. Blocking an entire area code increases the risk of missing important calls.
Number range blocking provides a more precise and safer way to reduce spam while still allowing valid calls through.
How to enable number range blocking
To enable number range blocking, follow the steps for your platform below.
On Android
Open the YouMail app.
Tap the Protection tab (shield icon).
Tap the three dots in the upper left corner.
Select Protection Settings.
Select Automatically block these callers.
Enable Block number ranges.
On iPhone
Open the YouMail app.
Tap the Protection tab (shield icon).
Tap the three dots in the top corner.
Select Protection Settings.
Enable Block number ranges.
Important: On iPhone, number range blocking works by silencing calls through iOS. Calls may still go to voicemail depending on your device settings. |
On the YouMail website
Sign in to YouMail.com.
Select Spam Protection.
Select Settings, then click Edit.
Check Block number ranges to enable the feature.
Select Manage number ranges to add or remove prefixes.
How to add and manage number ranges
Once number range blocking is enabled, you can add specific prefixes to block.
Enter the prefix digits shown in repeated spam calls
Save the range to apply blocking immediately
Remove ranges at any time if they block legitimate calls
Tip: Start with prefixes you see most often in your call log rather than adding multiple ranges at once. |
How number range blocking works with other protections
Number range blocking works alongside YouMail’s other call protection features:
Individual number blocking continues to work as expected
Known spam numbers are still blocked using YouMail’s spam directory
Contacts are not blocked unless they match a configured range, and are not saved
This layered approach helps maximize spam reduction without excessive blocking.
Best practices for number range blocking
Add number ranges gradually and monitor results
Save important contacts to avoid accidental silencing
Review and adjust ranges as spam patterns change
Combine number range blocking with other call protection settings for the best results
FAQs
What happens when a call matches a blocked number range?
When a call matches a blocked number range, YouMail handles the call based on your call protection settings. Depending on your device and platform, the call may be blocked, silenced, or sent to voicemail without ringing your phone.
Why can’t I block an entire area code?
Blocking an entire area code would block many legitimate calls because area codes cover large geographic regions. Number range blocking is more precise and reduces the risk of missing important calls.
Can I remove a blocked number range later?
Yes. You can remove or edit number ranges at any time from the app or the website.
Why am I still seeing missed calls from blocked ranges?
You may still see missed calls because some platforms silence calls instead of fully rejecting them. While the phone does not ring, the call can still appear in your call history or voicemail, depending on your device settings.
How do I know which number ranges to block?
To identify useful number ranges to block, review your recent spam calls and look for repeated prefixes. Spam callers often change only the last few digits, making number range blocking effective against those patterns.
