Overview
Switching to YouMail does not delete or remove your existing voicemail messages. Your carrier continues to manage any voicemails received before YouMail is activated, while YouMail begins handling messages only after activation. This article explains how voicemail storage works during the transition and what to expect.

How voicemail works when switching to YouMail
When you activate YouMail, voicemail handling changes going forward—but past messages are unaffected.
Here’s what happens:
Carrier voicemails stay with your carrier
Any voicemail messages received before YouMail activation remain stored with your mobile carrier.YouMail handles new messages only
Once YouMail is activated, all unanswered calls and new voicemail messages are handled by YouMail instead of your carrier.Carrier retention policies still apply
Mobile carriers may automatically delete old voicemail messages if their inbox is unused or reaches storage limits. Retention timelines vary by carrier.
Important: YouMail cannot access, restore, or manage voicemail messages stored by your carrier prior to activation.
Retrieving older carrier voicemails
If you need access to voicemail messages left before activating YouMail:
Check your carrier’s voicemail inbox directly
Review your carrier’s voicemail retention policy
Follow your carrier’s instructions for saving or exporting messages
Note: For guidance on retrieving older carrier voicemails, see our article on retrieving previous voicemails before switching to YouMail.
Tip: If you have important voicemails stored with your carrier, consider saving or exporting them before activating YouMail.
Pro tip: Once YouMail is active, download or archive important voicemail messages regularly to avoid storage concerns.
