Overview
Retrieving messages from your old voicemail inbox allows you to listen to voicemails left before YouMail was activated. This article explains the two supported ways to access pre-YouMail messages and highlights important considerations to ensure YouMail continues working correctly.
How to Retrieve Messages from your Old Voicemail Inbox
To retrieve messages from your old voicemail inbox, follow one of the methods below, depending on your carrier and device access.
Option 1: Use your carrier’s voicemail app
Open your carrier's voicemail app on your phone
Look for voicemails stored in the carrier system from before YouMail was activated
Play or save any messages you want to keep
Note: Most carriers provide a voicemail app that stores messages left in their system. If you have access to this app, your old voicemails should still be available there.
Option 2: Dial your old voicemail access number
Open the Phone app on your device.
Dial your carrier's voicemail access number.
Follow the prompts to listen to your old messages.
Note: If you do not remember your voicemail access number, contact your carrier directly and ask them to provide it.
Important:
Accessing your old voicemail inbox may reactivate your carrier voicemail. If new messages stop appearing in YouMail after checking old voicemails, be sure to reactivate call forwarding to YouMail.
Some carriers require reconnecting to their voicemail system to listen to old messages. If this happens, you must reactivate call forwarding to YouMail to continue receiving messages through YouMail.
Note: Auto Cleanup is automatically enabled if your YouMail inbox remains full for two weeks. This helps free up space for new messages.
Tip: After retrieving old messages, double-check that call forwarding to YouMail is active to avoid missing new voicemails.
Pro tip: Save important pre-YouMail voicemails locally or back them up before switching between voicemail systems to prevent accidental loss.
