Import your contacts into YouMail

Uploading contacts using a CSV file or your phone contacts helps you move your existing contacts into YouMail quickly and easily. This option is useful when switching to YouMail Visual Voicemail or syncing contacts from other services.

How to upload contacts via CSV on the web


Follow these steps to upload your contacts using a CSV file from the YouMail website.

  1. Sign in to your YouMail account


    Log in to your account using a web browser and open the My YouMail tab.

  2. Open Contacts


    Click the Contacts tab, then select Import from the toolbar above your contacts list.

  3. Start the upload process
    Click Upload Contacts File, then choose the program where your contacts are stored.

  4. Create a CSV file
    Follow the instructions for your selected app to export your contacts as a CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file.

    Note: CSV files are commonly supported by apps like Outlook, Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, Palm Desktop, LinkedIn, and Plaxo.

  5. Upload the CSV file
    Click Browse to locate your CSV file, then click Upload File to import your contacts.

Troubleshooting common issues


  • File will not upload: Make sure the file is saved as a .csv file and not another format.

  • Missing contact details: Confirm that names and phone numbers were included when exporting the CSV file.

  • Duplicate contacts: Review your contacts list after uploading and remove duplicates if needed.

How to Upload Your Contacts from the Android app to Your Device


Follow these steps to import your phone contacts into the YouMail Android app.

  1. Open the YouMail app
    Launch the YouMail app on your Android device.

  2. Open the menu
    Tap the three-line menu in the top-left corner of the screen.

  3. Go to Settings


    Tap Settings from the menu.

  4. Select Contacts


    In Settings, tap Contacts to manage contact options.

  5. Upload contacts
    Tap Upload Contacts and allow permission when prompted so YouMail can access your phone contacts.

  6. Start upload
    Tap Start Upload to import your contacts into YouMail.

Important: YouMail needs permission to access your contacts. If permission is denied, contacts cannot be imported.

Troubleshooting common issues


  • Contacts did not import: Make sure contact permissions are enabled for the YouMail app in Android system settings.

  • Missing names or numbers: Confirm your contacts are saved to your phone or Google account, not just the SIM card.

  • Upload option not visible: Ensure you are using the latest version of the YouMail Android app.

How to upload contacts from the YouMail iOS app

Navigate to Contacts

  1. Open the YouMail app on your iOS device.

  2. Tap the Contacts icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

  3. Select the three dots in the top right corner.

  4. Enable Auto-save contacts to device.


Important:

Duplicate contacts with the same phone number can cause issues with the greeting that plays for callers. Before or after importing, make sure to remove repeated contacts from your device.

Tip

After importing, open the iOS Contacts app and confirm a few entries to ensure names and numbers transferred correctly.


Managing and editing imported contacts

  1. Edit anywhere: Contacts can be edited in the YouMail app or through your online YouMail account.

  2. Sync changes: If you edit a contact in your phone’s Contacts app and resync, those updates are reflected in YouMail.

  3. Extra Line behavior: Custom greetings assigned to contacts do not apply when a contact calls an Extra Line ( this is by design).
