Does Google Voice Work with YouMail?

Learn why Google Voice doesn’t fully support YouMail and what options are available.

Overview

YouMail works by using carrier-level conditional call forwarding to take over missed calls and voicemail. While Google Voice can sometimes forward calls to YouMail, the two systems do not always communicate reliably, which can result in calls failing to connect or voicemail not being deposited correctly.

Key benefits of understanding compatibility

  • Fewer missed calls: Avoid voicemail delivery failures

  • Clear expectations: Understand why forwarding may not work consistently

  • Better reliability: Choose the best setup for uninterrupted voicemail

  • Informed decisions: Know when porting is the best option

How Google Voice works with YouMail

While it is possible to forward Google Voice calls to your YouMail Deposit Number, this setup is not fully supported and may lead to inconsistent behavior.

Why Google Voice isn’t fully compatible

YouMail relies on conditional call forwarding, which is managed at the mobile carrier level. This allows calls to forward to YouMail only when your line is:

  • Busy

  • Unanswered

  • Unreachable

Google Voice operates differently.

VoIP-based call handling

Google Voice is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service. Instead of using a traditional carrier network, it:

  • Routes calls internally through Google’s systems

  • Manages voicemail directly within the Google Voice service

  • Controls call forwarding without carrier involvement

Because of this architecture:

  • Google Voice does not support conditional call forwarding codes such as *004# or *73

  • Google Voice voicemail cannot be replaced by a third-party voicemail provider like YouMail

  • Missed calls may never reach YouMail consistently

Important

Even if call forwarding appears to work temporarily, Google Voice updates or routing changes can interrupt voicemail delivery without warning.

Best option for using YouMail with Google Voice

To ensure the best and most reliable experience, YouMail recommends porting your Google Voice number into YouMail.

Why porting works better

  • Direct carrier integration: Your number works natively with YouMail

  • Reliable voicemail delivery: Missed calls always reach your YouMail inbox

  • Full feature access: Spam blocking, Smart Greetings, auto-replies, and more

  • No forwarding conflicts: Eliminates Google Voice routing limitations
