Overview
YouMail depends on your mobile carrier’s call forwarding system to deliver missed calls to your voicemail. Because SIP and other VoIP technologies do not use standard carrier call forwarding, YouMail does not currently support forwarding calls via SIP. This article explains why SIP forwarding isn’t compatible and what options work best instead.
Why SIP forwarding isn’t supported
YouMail handles voicemails by receiving calls that are forwarded by your carrier when your line is busy, unanswered, or unreachable. This process relies on carrier-level conditional call forwarding, not internet-based routing.
SIP and VoIP services—such as IP phones, PBX systems, and softphone apps—route calls over the internet rather than through traditional mobile carrier networks. Because these services do not use standard cellular call forwarding protocols, they cannot reliably pass calls to YouMail.
As a result, SIP-based forwarding is not compatible with YouMail’s voicemail, call screening, or spam protection features.
Key limitations of SIP and VoIP forwarding
Carrier forwarding dependency: YouMail requires conditional call forwarding provided by a mobile carrier
VoIP incompatibility: SIP routes calls over the internet, not cellular networks
Feature limitations: Calls forwarded via SIP cannot be processed correctly by YouMail
Recommended setup for YouMail
For the best experience with YouMail, use a standard mobile carrier that supports conditional call forwarding, such as:
AT&T
T-Mobile
Verizon
Other compatible mobile carriers
This ensures full access to YouMail’s voicemail handling, spam blocking, call management, and notification features.
Important
YouMail does not support direct SIP, VoIP, or PBX call forwarding. Calls must be forwarded using your carrier’s busy, no answer, or unreachable call forwarding settings.
Note
If you are using a landline, office phone, or hosted VoIP system, YouMail may still be used for voicemail only by having your provider forward missed calls using carrier-level forwarding—not SIP routing.
Pro tip
If you’re unsure whether your carrier supports conditional call forwarding, contact their support team and ask specifically about busy, no answer, and unreachable call forwarding.
