Calls are going straight to voicemail or not ringing

Learn why calls may bypass ringing and how to unblock contacts or fix call forwarding issues.

Overview

If calls are going straight to voicemail or not ringing on your phone, the cause is usually incorrect call forwarding, call filtering settings, or blocked or duplicate contacts in YouMail. This guide explains how to identify the most common causes and restore normal ringing so important callers can reach you.

Key benefits

  • Restore important calls: Ensure friends, family, and clients can reach you

  • Fix accidental blocks: Unblock contacts across the app and web

  • Correct call forwarding: Reset forwarding so your phone rings first

  • Resolve duplicate contact issues: Prevent calls from bypassing the ringing

Why do calls go straight to voicemail

Calls may bypass ringing and go directly to voicemail for several reasons:

  • Unconditional call forwarding enabled: All calls forward immediately

  • Do Not Disturb or call filtering is active: Calls are silenced before ringing

  • Silence Unknown Callers enabled (iPhone): Unknown callers are routed to voicemail

  • Blocked contact: The caller is blocked in YouMail or on the device

  • Duplicate contact entries: Multiple entries for the same number cause routing issues

  • Carrier network settings: Network-level restrictions prevent ringing

How to fix calls going straight to voicemail

Follow the steps below to identify and resolve the issue.

Step 1: Disable and reactivate call forwarding

YouMail uses Conditional Call Forwarding, which allows your phone to ring before voicemail answers. Resetting forwarding ensures it is configured correctly.

To reset call forwarding:

  1. Open the YouMail app.

  2. Go to Settings.

  3. Select Activation or Phone Lines.

  4. Follow the on-screen steps to deactivate call forwarding.

  5. Reactivate call forwarding through the app.

Important:
This resets forwarding from Unconditional to Conditional Call Forwarding.

Step 2: Check call filtering settings

On Android

  1. Open your phone’s Settings.

  2. Turn off Do Not Disturb.

  3. Disable any Contacts-only or call filtering options.

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap Phone.

  3. Select Silence Unknown Callers.

  4. Toggle the setting off if enabled.

Note:
These settings can prevent your phone from ringing even when forwarding is correct.

Step 3: Unblock contacts in YouMail

A blocked contact will always go straight to voicemail.

Unblock a contact on the iPhone app

  1. Open the YouMail app.

  2. Tap Contacts (person icon at the bottom).

  3. Select the contact you want to unblock.

  4. Tap Unblock (hexagon icon).

  1. Open the YouMail app.

  2. Tap the menu icon (three lines).

  3. Select Contacts, then tap Groups.

  4. Open the Blocked group.

  5. Select the contact.

  6. Tap Unassign to remove them from the blocked list.

Unblock a contact on the website

  1. Sign in at YouMail.com.

  2. Select People from the left-hand menu.

  3. Click Groups.

  4. Open the Blocked group.

  5. Click the X next to the contact you want to unblock.

Note:
If the contact does not appear in the Blocked group, duplicate contact entries may be causing the issue.

Step 4: Fix duplicate contacts

Duplicate contact entries can cause callers to be routed incorrectly.

Why duplicate contacts cause issues

YouMail treats each contact entry separately. When the same phone number appears multiple times, calls may:

  • Go straight to voicemail

  • Bypass normal call handling

  • Ring inconsistently

Important:
YouMail imports contacts from your device or uploaded CSV files. Duplicates must be removed from the source.

Remove duplicate contacts in YouMail

  1. Sign in to YouMail.com.

  2. Select People, then click Contacts.

  3. Use the Search bar to find the phone number.

  4. Match the number format exactly as shown in YouMail.

  5. Identify duplicate entries.

  6. Select the checkbox next to the duplicate contact.

  7. Click Actions, then select Delete.

Once removed, calls from that number should ring normally.

Step 5: Test your phone

After making changes:

  1. Place a test call from another phone.

  2. Confirm your phone rings before voicemail answers.

Tip:
Always test after changing forwarding or contact settings.

Step 6: Contact your carrier

If calls still go straight to voicemail, the issue may be carrier-related.

Ask your carrier to verify:

  • Conditional Call Forwarding is enabled

  • Unconditional Call Forwarding is disabled

  • No network-level call blocking is active

Pro tip:
Carrier network settings cannot be fixed by reinstalling the YouMail app.
