How to change voicemail length for your callers

Learn how to update the maximum time callers have to leave a voicemail using your YouMail settings

YouMail lets you set the maximum length of voicemail messages your callers can leave — from as little as 15 seconds up to 5 minutes — so you can tailor message duration based on your needs and subscription level.

Overview

By default, YouMail limits how long callers can leave a voicemail based on your plan. Free accounts have a shorter maximum duration, whereas paid subscribers can send longer messages. You can change this setting in your online YouMail account under Caller Settings. This article walks through the steps to adjust voicemail length, so callers have the right amount of time to leave messages.

Key benefits/use cases

  • Customize message time: Let callers leave longer or shorter voicemail based on your preference.

  • Improve caller experience: Allow enough time for detailed information.

  • Plan-based control: Free vs paid plans influence maximum voicemail length.

  • Flexible values: Choose from multiple preset lengths to match your use case.

How voicemail length works in YouMail

YouMail lets you set the maximum voicemail length that callers can leave before the system stops recording. Free accounts are limited to a shorter maximum message duration, while paid accounts can choose longer options.

Change your voicemail length

To change how long callers can leave a voicemail:

On the YouMail website

  1. Sign in to your account at YouMail.com.

  2. In the left navigation, click Settings. Then select Mailbox.

  3. Scroll to Caller Settings and click Edit.

  4. Under Maximum Voicemail Length, select the length you want callers to have.

    • 15 seconds

    • 30 seconds

    • 45 seconds

    • 1 minute

    • 1.5 minutes

    • 2 minutes

    • 3 minutes

    • 4 minutes

    • 5 minutes

  5. Save your changes. (The setting applies immediately.)

Important: If you’re on a free YouMail plan, the maximum available voicemail length may be limited (for example, up to 3 minutes). Upgrading your plan can expand available options to longer durations in your Caller Settings.

Troubleshooting voicemail length issues

If callers are cut off too soon after voicemail starts:

  • Verify your selected length: Go back to Settings → Mailbox → Caller Settings and confirm the chosen maximum.

  • Check your plan limits: Free plans might cap length at a shorter duration, while paid plans include longer options (up to 5 minutes).

  • Test with a call: Place a test call from another phone and let it go to voicemail to ensure the setting is applied.

  • Update greeting timing: Longer greetings might shorten the available recording time — consider trimming lengthy greetings if callers consistently run out of time.

FAQs

What’s the difference between voicemail length and number of rings?

Voicemail length controls how long a caller can record a message after voicemail answers. The number of rings controls how long the phone rings before voicemail answers. These are separate settings and are adjusted in different places: voicemail length in Caller Settings (YouMail), and ring timing via your carrier’s forwarding or phone settings, like “number of rings.”
